SUBJUNCTIVES
The subjunctive mood expresses uncertainty (a wish or a doubt). It is also used in various constructions, such as result clauses or indirect speech.
For GCSE, you only need to know the imperfect and pluperfect tenses of the subjunctive!
Imperfect Subjunctive:
To form the imperfect subjunctive, take the present active infinitive (2nd principal part) and add the present endings.
Thankfully, this is the same for all conjugations!!
Pluperfect Subjunctive:
To form the pluperfect active subjunctive, take the perfect active infinitive (3rd principal part root + isse = e.g. amavisse) and add the present endings again.
Again, this is the same for all conjugations!!
The pluperfect passive subjunctive is formed with the perfect passive participle (4th principal part) + the imperfect active subjunctive of esse.
And that’s it for subjunctives! Easy right?
