A Remarkable Discovery at Burghley House!

In the midst of routine construction works on the grounds of Burghley House, nestled near Stamford, Lincolnshire, an extraordinary find has captured the attention of historians and archaeologists alike. This English country estate, crafted by the Cecil family in the 16th century, stands as a testament to centuries of history and architectural grandeur. Its Grade I listed status and striking Elizabethan façade, reminiscent of the opulent lodgings of Richmond Palace, draw visitors from across the globe. Yet, amidst the modern hustle and bustle of construction, a piece of ancient art emerged from the earth, bridging the gap between past and present.

It was a typical day on the construction site when Greg Crawley stumbled upon something unexpected. As the digger unearthed what initially seemed like a mere stone, it soon revealed itself to be a sculpted face, intricately carved from marble. Crawley's astonishment was palpable as he realized the magnitude of his discovery—a Roman marble statue. His excitement was shared by those who would later examine the find, as it was transported to the House's Curator before undergoing meticulous restoration by a skilled conservator.

Dating back to the 1st or 2nd century AD, the head portrays the serene countenance of a woman, her features frozen in time. Yet, alongside this artifact lies a curious detail—a weathered iron dowel. This dowel, expertly inserted to facilitate attachment to a bust or pedestal, points to a practice common among Italian traders in the 18th century.

During this era, antiquities adorned the parlors of European aristocrats, acquired as prestigious souvenirs during their travels on the Grand Tour. It's believed that the example discovered at Burghley House was procured during one such excursion in the 1760s by Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl of Exeter, adding another layer of intrigue to its storied past.
