Macedonian Tomb of a high status individual found in Aegae!
In the heart of Central Macedonia, archaeologists made a remarkable discovery that sheds light on the grandeur of Macedonian royalty. During the 36th Annual Archaeological Meeting for “the Archaeological Project in Macedonia and Thrace in 2023,” Angeliki Kottaridis, the Honorary Superintendent of Antiquities, unveiled the revelation: a high-status Macedonian tomb.
Aegae, once the proud capital of Macedonia, holds a significant place in history as the burial site for royalty, even after the capital shifted to Pella in the 4th century BC. It was within the walls of Aegae that the legendary Philip II of Macedon met his tragic end at the hands of an assassin. Now, amidst the remnants of this ancient city, a new chapter of history emerges.
The tomb's discovery occurred during construction work for a sewage network, revealing an entranceway with piles of stones, guarding secrets buried for centuries. Within the tomb's confines, measuring 3.7 x 2.7 meters, lies a testament to the wealth and status of its occupants.
Adorning the interior walls is a golden band with bows, a symbol of prestige and extravagance characteristic of Macedonian royalty. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, the tomb stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Alexander the Great's empire.
Among the artefacts discovered within the tomb are the remains of a man, accompanied by a shield embellished with reinforced iron parts and an array of weapons—a testament to his status as a warrior. Beside him lies the remains of a woman, presumed to be his wife, surrounded by an array of jewellery, including beads, necklaces, and a resplendent golden myrtle wreath—an emblem of eternal love and devotion.
Ms. Kottaridis elucidated that this part of the necropolis served as the final resting place for high-status Macedonians, as evidenced by previous discoveries of tombs adorned with lavish funerary objects. Each artifact unearthed speaks volumes about the opulent lifestyle and cultural richness that defined Macedonian society.
The discovery of the high-status Macedonian tomb in Aegae serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of ancient civilizations.
