Pompeii fresco uncovered depicting Phrixus and Helle

In an extraordinary revelation at the historic Roman city of Pompeii, archaeologists have recently uncovered a stunning fresco depicting the Greek mythological siblings, Phrixus and Helle, at the so-called House of Leda. The director of Pompeii Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, described the find as a poignant reflection of history unfolding once more.

The vividly colored fresco captures the essence of the myth, portraying Helle on the brink of drowning, her face obscured by tumultuous waves as she reaches out to her brother. Zuchtriegel emphasized the significance of the myth, drawing parallels with contemporary issues. He stated, “History has repeated itself,” as he shared insights into the excavation and restoration work. "It is a beautiful fresco in an excellent state of conservation. The myth of Phrixus and Helle is widespread at Pompeii but is topical too. They are two refugees at sea, a brother and sister, forced to flee because their stepmother wants rid of them, and she does so with deception and corruption. [Helle] fell into the water and drowned.”

The fresco not only showcases vibrant colors but also displays exquisite artistry, bringing the ancient myth to life. Helle is poignantly portrayed struggling against the waves, reaching out desperately to her brother, who is seated on top of the ram of the Golden Fleece

Zuchtriegel expressed optimism about opening these meticulously preserved homes to the public in the near future, underlining the cultural and historical significance of this latest discovery.

Pompeii, famously destroyed in AD79 by a volcanic eruption that claimed over 2,000 lives, has evolved into one of the most visited archaeological sites globally. Recent months have brought forth surprising revelations, including the discovery of 13 Nativity-style statuettes providing evidence of pagan ritual traditions in the ancient Roman city. Additionally, in June of the previous year, a captivating still life fresco resembling a pizza was uncovered, featuring an item bearing a striking resemblance to a pineapple. As Pompeii continues to yield its secrets, each discovery adds a layer to the rich tapestry of its storied past.
