Roman remains uncovered off the coast of Portoroz, Slovenia!
In a captivating archaeological discovery, the Institute for Underwater Archaeology (ZaPA) has unearthed submerged Roman remains off the picturesque coast of Portoroz, Slovenia. Portoroz, translating to the "port of roses," is nestled on the Adriatic, perched on a small peninsula within the Municipality of Piran. The findings shed light on the Roman presence in the region, unveiling a rich tapestry of history beneath the waters.

Dating back to the Roman period, the peninsula was assimilated into the expanding Roman Empire around 178-177 BC. During this time, a thriving rural community established residences known as villae rusticae, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape. The recent archaeological exploration by ZaPA focused on a small coastal area, strategically located across from the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport.
ZaPA's underwater archaeologists have meticulously uncovered layers from the Roman era, revealing a treasure trove of artifacts. Among the findings are an abundance of ceramics, including amphorae and imported kitchen and tableware. These remnants provide a glimpse into the daily lives of the ancient residents, showcasing their culinary practices and trading networks.
Beyond the ceramic treasures, the study has unearthed compelling evidence pointing to the area's role as a Roman port during antiquity. The discovery of numerous wooden stakes and two well-preserved wooden masts dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD paints a vivid picture of maritime activities in the region. According to the researchers, "The findings so far indicate that in late antiquity there was a small port with a mooring and a wooden structure."
This recent revelation builds upon previous studies of the Portoroz coastline, which have hinted at a submerged settlement and Roman-era buildings. A noteworthy discovery in 2004 revealed a Roman fish farm near the present study area, adding another layer to the historical narrative of this coastal haven.
